What’s the website you frequent most? For me, I wouldn’t be surprised if it is Whiskybase. It has been a trusty resource for me for well over a decade. Late last year they celebrated a new milestone – 250,000 bottles in Whiskybase. That’s a quarter million, yo. (Sorry, I’ve been re-watching Breaking Bad.)
To commemorate this occasion they bottled a whisky, something they’ve done for every 10,000th bottle added to Whiskybase. I’ve reviewed other examples throughout the years, including a Ben Nevis, Littlemill, Highland Park and Cooley. All blue chip distilleries.
Their latest in the series is from another distillery that is held in high regard. The highest of regards even. Even though it’s not stated on the label, this is likely a Clynelish. (Probably a sister cask of this Secret Highland, actually.) I love that these batches are now getting to their mid-teens.

Secret Highland 2008 16 Years (59.3%, Whiskybase, C#16)
Nose: Chalky minerals interwoven with lemon pith, lime and candle wax. Also slivers of Greek yoghurt mixed with pieces of banana. Then some stewed apples and light floral notes.
Taste: Let’s call it a waxy mouthfeel considering its provenance, but I wouldn’t be mad at anyone for labeling it creamy. Arrives on white pepper, then jammy fruits, tinned peaches and macadamia nuts. Not super complex maybe, but firing on all cylinders.
Finish: Medium length. Gentles notes of wet pebbles, apricots and quinces. Just a pinch of salt also.
