I quite enjoy the regular Scallywag, a Speyside Blended Malt without an age statement. But not too long ago Douglas Laing released this Scallywag 13 Years Old matured exclusively in sherry butts. It is the first Scallywag-release to carry an age statement. This can’t go wrong, right?
Scallywag 13 Years Old (46%, Douglas Laing)
Nose: The sherry influence is hugely evident, with lots of dried red fruits (raisins, raisins, raisins) and red berries. Hints of fudge and caramel, as well as molasses. A whiff of cinnamon and a whisper of aniseed.
Taste: A nice oily, syrupy mouthfeel. More raisins, milk chocolate, and cappuccino. Somewhat spicy with cloves and again some cinnamon.
Finish: Drying, slightly tannic and spicy. Short to medium in length.
Rating: 87
If you’re looking for a good sherried Speysider, this Scallywag is a good bet. I can’t imagine this’ll disappoint anyone.
