Hazelburn 2008 15 Years Oloroso Cask Matured (2023)

Probably the least admired of the three Springbank brands, Hazelburn can be stunning whisky regardless. Here’s my review of the new(-ish) Hazelburn 2008 15 Years Oloroso Cask Matured. I have high hopes, as I positively adored the previous edition.

I’m struggling to add much because I’ve shared most of my thoughts on Hazelburn in previous posts. I will say I’m looking forward to visiting Campbeltown again in a few months. If only just for a day during a holiday on the Isle Arran with friends. The drive alone along the west coast of the Kintyre peninsula is worth it.

We’ll probably opt for a Cadenhead’s Warehouse Tasting. The last time was in 2016 – how time flies. While I don’t expect the whiskies on offer to be as outstanding as they were then, I’m sure we’ll have a good time. Fingers crossed there will be something decent for sale in the Springbank Distillery Shop as well. Who knows, maybe even a nice Hazelburn from the cage.

For now, I’ll happily make do with this Hazelburn 2008 15 Years Oloroso Cask Matured. It spent 100% of its time in ex-Oloroso sherry casks, which is how we like it.

Hazelburn 2008 15 Years Oloroso Cask Matured (55.8%, OB, 2023)

Nose: Red fruits, a hint of blackcurrants and a fair amount of milk chocolate. There’s leather, as well as raisins, menthol and strawberries. Probably figs and dates too. Good but intense sherry influence. Admittedly, there’s not much about this that says Campbeltown to me.
Taste: This is more like it. More recognisable now. A syrupy texture. Leather, tobacco and just a tinge of smoke and char. Also plums, mocha, a pinch of pepper and fennel. Not much red fruits, but more oak and a slight dryness.
Finish: Medium length. Notes of espresso beans, rum-soaked raisins and charred oak.

Conclusion
It's good, but doesn't work entirely either. The Hazelburn 2008 15 Years Oloroso Cask Matured showcases the cask influence to a degree that is detrimental to the spirit character. That's no issue if you're a lover of sherry-matured whisky, but might be problematic if you're hoping for that Campbeltown experience.
