Glen Scotia’s Double Cask is one of the distillery’s more popular core range offerings. Apparently so much so, that the distillery decided to expand its range, introducing the Glen Scotia Double Cask Rum Finish lat last year. It seems there are others coming as well.
But for now, the range consists of just two. I’ve already written about the original Double Cask, so let’s focus on this newest sibling. Rum, eh? After an initial maturation in first-fill ex-bourbon barrels, this Glen Scotia was finished in Guyanese demerara rum casks for a reported eight months. Generally, that would mean some full-bodied Caribbean rum.

Glen Scotia Double Cask Rum Finish (46%, OB, 2022)
Nose: It has this soft dirtiness combined with an elegant freshness and gentle cereal notes. Soft notes of honey, brown sugar and a gentle burnt edge, but also a sliver of tinned pineapple, jammy apricots and maybe just a hint of smoke.
Taste: Somewhat oily mouthfeel combined with a soft smokiness, slight minerality and gentle farmy touches. There’s a hint of crushed mint, ginger and dark caramel. Some oak spices too. Finally whispers of coconut and apricots.
Finish: Medium. Lingering oak spices, a pinch of salt and fermented bananas.
