Happy Christmas everyone! Hope you have a great day today (if you’re reading this on December 25th). Or if you’ve come across this review later, I sincerely hope you’ve enjoyed some relaxing time with friends and/or family. So, how about A Good Old-Fashioned Christmas Whisky?
The Whisky Exchange have been releasing Christmas whiskies for a good few years now, much like their series for Black Friday (and even April Fool’s). This year’s edition is a Scotch single malt whisky from an undisclosed Speyside distillery. It’s aged for 15 years and, well, that’s about all I know about it. Well, except that it aged in ex-sherry casks.
If you’re looking for longer musings on The Whisky Exchange’s A Good Old-Fashioned Christmas Whisky, I suggest you head over to The Dramble, maybe my favourite whisky website. Matt’s currently busy working on other things, so his website isn’t updated as frequently anymore, but whenever he does post something, it is required reading.
After all, there aren’t many people who can write at length about the taste of Christmas (in the context of whisky), and keep my attention for the entirety of the article.
A Good Old-Fashioned Christmas Whisky 15 Years (52.5%, The Whisky Exchange, 2023)
Nose: A sliver of almond paste alongside notes of marzipan, orange peel and cloves, but also a touch of Morello cherries, cinnamon sugar and stewed apples. Finally whiffs of polished leather, nutmeg and ginger.
Taste: Moderately oily mouthfeel, yet lively with plenty of oak spices (cinnamon, cloves, black pepper). Then a hint of oranges, burnt toast and dark chocolate, but also a sliver of ristretto and hazelnuts.
Finish: Medium length with lingering oak spices, honey, toffee and charred oak.
